Wire drawing process: from rod to finished wire

Steel wire is made by cleaning hot-rolled rod, pointing its end and pulling it through a series of ever smaller dies, with annealing added between passes or at the end and a coating added afterwards if needed. Each step shapes the diameter, strength and surface you can specify.

Key facts

  • Drawing pulls metal through a die with a smaller hole, so the wire gets thinner and longer.
  • Wire usually needs more than one draw, through successively smaller dies.
  • Cold work raises hardness and tensile strength and lowers ductility, and annealing reverses the effect.
  • Zinc is applied after drawing, so a galvanized wire has been through every step of an uncoated one.
  • Reinwent does not draw wire: the mills in Türkiye that we source from do.

The short answer

Steel wire starts as a coil of hot-rolled rod and ends as a coil of wire with a fixed diameter. In between, a mill removes the scale, narrows the tip of the rod, pulls it through a row of dies and then decides, from the product it is making, whether to soften it, coat it or leave it as drawn. A buyer never sees these steps, but every line of a specification traces back to one of them. Reinwent is a trading and sourcing company: the drawing is done by manufacturers in Türkiye, and we do not run or control it.

Step by step: rod to finished wire

The order follows the references and is the general route, not a description of one plant.

  1. Start from rod. Wikipedia says commercial wire drawing usually begins with a coil of hot-rolled rod. Rod is a different product from wire; see wire rod vs wire.
  2. Clean the surface. Hot rolling leaves scale, and drawing needs it gone. IspatGuru names blasting with steel abrasives as the usual method, with acid pickling as the alternative.
  3. Point the end. The leading end is narrowed so that it fits the first die and can be gripped from the far side.
  4. Lubricate. Lubrication protects the dies and the surface of the wire. The references describe wet drawing, dry drawing and a soft metal film that acts as a solid lubricant.
  5. Draw through dies. Each die has a smaller hole than the one before. Volume does not change, so as the diameter falls the length grows. IspatGuru says steel wire uses tungsten carbide dies.
  6. Anneal if needed. Intermediate annealing counters the hardening that drawing causes, so the wire can be drawn further. A final anneal on the finished size makes the wire soft.
  7. Finish. IspatGuru lists inspection, protection against corrosion, packing and dispatch after drawing. A zinc coating belongs here when the product is galvanized.

What each step means for your specification

Every step leaves a mark on a field of the specification. The table pairs them.

Wire drawing steps and the specification field each one affects
StepWhat happensField it affects
CleaningScale is removed from the rodSurface condition of the finished wire
LubricationProtects dies, shapes the surface finishSurface: say if it must be clean or may carry a film
Passes through diesDiameter falls, length grows, steel hardensDiameter in millimetres and the tensile band
Final annealRestores ductility on the finished sizeCondition: hard drawn or annealed
CoatingZinc is applied after drawingCoating weight in g/m² and its standard

You specify results, not process steps. A mill needs the finished size, the condition and the strength band, not your die schedule.

Why drawing makes wire stronger

Each pass deforms the steel plastically. Wikipedia says cold working raises hardness, yield strength and tensile strength, and that the ductility of a work-hardened material is decreased. IspatGuru says drawing strengthens the steel. The more reduction since the last anneal, the harder the wire.

That is why annealing sits in the middle of the process. Wikipedia describes process annealing as restoring some of the ductility of a product being cold worked, so it can be worked further without breaking. The condition itself is covered in hard drawn vs annealed wire.

Where our four products leave the line

The four products differ in the last step they went through.

  • Cold drawn wire. It stops after the last pass and is left uncoated. Our cold drawn wire is offered from 0.8 to 6 mm with a tensile strength of 500 to 1,000 N/mm², to EN 10218-2. Why that finish is called bright is in what bright wire is, and the drawing itself is covered in what cold drawn wire is.
  • Black annealed wire. It takes a final anneal after drawing. Our black annealed wire is offered from 0.8 to 8 mm with a tensile strength of 300 to 450 N/mm², to EN 10218-2. The heat treatment is explained in what annealed wire is.
  • Galvanized wire. It takes a zinc coating after drawing. Our galvanized wire is offered from 0.8 to 8 mm with a coating weight of 50 to 300 g/m², to EN 10244-2 and ASTM A641. For the coating step, read the hot-dip galvanizing process.
  • Spring wire. It is high carbon wire formed into coil springs and other parts, and our spring steel wire is offered from 1.3 to 4 mm. No source we read describes a separate route for spring wire, so we describe none. The strength band and standard are agreed per order and confirmed in the quotation.

What the sources do not give

The references name reductions per pass, die angles and machine speeds, and we leave them out. They describe drawing in general, across many metals, and they are the mill’s working settings, not terms of a steel wire order. Wikipedia says the strength-enhancing effect can be substantial but gives no figure for steel wire, so the only tensile figures here are the ranges on our product pages.

What to state when you enquire

You specify what the process delivers.

  1. Diameter in millimetres. The wire gauge chart converts a gauge number. EN 10218-2 covers diameter tolerances of round wire, per the BSI and iTeh entries.
  2. Condition and strength band. Hard drawn, annealed or coated, with the N/mm² band where strength matters.
  3. Surface. Bright and uncoated, or zinc coated. If the wire must arrive free of any film, say so.
  4. Coating, for galvanized. Coating weight in g/m² and the standard.
  5. Coil weight, quantity and port. The container loading guide explains how coils ship.

Offers that leave one open cannot be compared. How steel wire is priced shows how an order builds up from rod to coil.

Questions buyers ask

How is steel wire made?

A mill cleans the scale off hot-rolled rod, narrows the end so it can be gripped, and pulls the rod through dies of falling size. Heat treatment and a coating follow only where the finished product calls for them.

What is the wire drawing process in simple terms?

It is pulling metal through a die with a smaller hole than the metal. The wire gets thinner and longer, and because this is done cold, it also gets stronger.

Why does wire go through more than one die?

The references say one draw is usually not enough, so the wire passes through successively smaller dies until it reaches its final diameter.

When is annealing used in wire making?

Between passes, when the steel has hardened too much to draw further, and at the end, when the finished wire is meant to be soft. Wire that skips the final anneal stays hard.

Which step decides the strength of the wire?

Mainly the drawing and the heat treatment together. Drawing raises strength and annealing lowers it again, so the strength band you state is the result of both.

Does Reinwent draw wire?

No. Reinwent is a trading and sourcing company. The mills in Türkiye that we source from run the drawing lines, and we neither operate nor control the process.

Which step makes wire galvanized?

A zinc coating is applied to wire after it is drawn. Drawing itself leaves wire uncoated, so galvanized wire is a coating step on top of the drawing step.

How do I order wire made by this process?

Send the diameter, condition, strength band, coating and destination through the quote form. A quotation reaches you within 12 hours at the latest, and we stay in contact with you until delivery.
