Black annealed wire for tying and binding

Black annealed wire is steel wire that has been softened by annealing. Annealing is a heat treatment that reduces hardness and increases ductility, so the wire is easy to bend, twist and knot by hand. That is why it is sold under several names: tie wire, binding wire and rebar tie wire all describe the same kind of soft wire. Here it is offered in diameters from 0.8 to 8 mm, with a tensile strength of 300 to 450 N/mm², to EN 10218-2.

What annealing changes

Wire that has been drawn to size is hardened by the drawing. Annealing relieves that work hardening and restores ductility, which is why a drawn wire can be annealed to make it workable again. The tensile strength range of 300 to 450 N/mm² is the lower band among the wire products on this site; cold drawn wire is offered at 500 to 1,000 N/mm².

EN 10218-2 sets tolerances on the diameter of round wire. It applies to uncoated (bright), metallic coated and non-metallic coated wire, and it does not apply where a product standard sets its own dimensional requirements.

Who uses it

Black annealed wire is used where a soft, easily tied wire is needed: tying reinforcing bars and binding and fixing in construction work. For wire with a zinc coating, see galvanized wire.

Questions buyers ask

What is black annealed wire?

It is steel wire that has been softened by annealing, a heat treatment that makes metal softer and more ductile. The result is a wire that bends and twists easily, which is why it is used as tie wire and binding wire.

What does annealing do to the wire?

Annealing is a heat treatment that increases ductility and reduces hardness, and it relieves internal stress. In wire, this restores some of the ductility lost during cold drawing.

What diameter and strength does black annealed wire have?

Diameters run from 0.8 mm to 8 mm, with a tensile strength of 300 to 450 N/mm².

Which standard is given for black annealed wire?

The standard given is EN 10218-2. It specifies the tolerances on diameter of round wire, and it applies to bright (uncoated), metallic coated and non-metallic coated steel wire.
