Black annealed wire
Black annealed wire is steel wire that has been softened by annealing, a heat treatment that increases ductility and reduces hardness. It is sold as rebar tie wire and described as soft, flexible wire that is easy to twist and hard to break, so it can be tied quickly on site. Its use is tying reinforcing bars and binding and fixing in construction work. Our black annealed wire has a tensile strength of 300 to 450 N/mm² and follows EN 10218-2.
Galvanized tie wire
Galvanized wire carries a zinc coating. The zinc acts as a barrier between the steel and the air, and because zinc reacts more readily than iron it corrodes first and keeps protecting the steel at gaps in the coating. Galvanized tie wire is sold for tying rebar and general site use, and for binding in construction, agriculture and industry. Our hot-dip galvanized wire is offered with a zinc coating of 50 to 300 g/m² and follows EN 10244-2 and ASTM A641.
Side by side
| Feature | Black annealed | Galvanized |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | No zinc coating | Zinc coating |
| Handling | Soft, annealed, easy to twist | Supplied in soft, medium and hard temper under ASTM A641 |
| Corrosion protection | Galvanized wire is offered where more corrosion resistance is needed | Zinc coating protects the steel |
| Typical use | Tying rebar, binding in construction | Tying and binding in construction, agriculture and industry |
| Standards on this site | EN 10218-2 | EN 10244-2, ASTM A641 |
How to choose
The deciding question is exposure. Where the wire will sit outdoors or in damp conditions, the zinc coating gives protection that black wire does not have. Where a soft wire is needed for quick tying and corrosion is not a concern, black annealed wire fits. For how the zinc coating is applied, see hot-dip vs electro-galvanized wire.
