Key facts
- Tie wire is bought in two finishes: black annealed, which is uncoated, and galvanized, which is zinc coated.
- Annealing is a softening heat treatment that raises ductility and lowers hardness, so the wire can be twisted by hand.
- A zinc coating shields the steel and corrodes first where the coating is damaged.
- EN 10218-2 sets diameter tolerances for round steel wire, coated or uncoated.
- ASTM A641 covers galvanized carbon steel wire in coils, in soft, medium and hard temper.
What do importers mean by tie wire?
For a distributor, wholesaler or contractor’s buying team, tie wire is a commodity line: a soft steel wire that site crews and workshops use to tie, bind and bundle. It is not a single standardised product. Two finishes dominate the trade, and an import order has to say which one is meant before any price can be compared.
Black annealed tie wire is drawn steel wire that has been heat treated to make it soft. Drawing hardens the steel, and annealing reverses that: references on steel call annealing a softening treatment that increases ductility and reduces hardness. The word black only tells you there is no zinc coating. Our black annealed tie wire is the product behind this finish, and our explainer what is annealed wire covers the heat treatment step by step.
Galvanized tie wire carries a zinc coating. While the zinc is intact it keeps moisture and air off the steel, and because zinc is more reactive than iron it corrodes first at cuts and small defects, so the steel underneath stays protected. Our galvanized wire is the product to ask for here, and our galvanized wire guide for importers goes deeper into coating mass and standards.
The names binding wire and annealed tie wire are used for the same soft wire in different markets. Write the finish and the specification in the order rather than the trade name; our binding wire guide covers buying under that name, and binding wire supplier for UAE importers covers UAE orders, and binding wire supplier for Nigeria importers covers Nigerian ones.
What is tie wire used for in the trade?
On the product data we work from, black annealed wire is listed for tying and binding in construction work and for other tying jobs that need a soft, flexible wire. Galvanized wire is listed for tying and binding in construction, for agriculture, and for binding and bundling in industry. The practical split for an importer is exposure: where the tied wire will sit in the open or in damp conditions, a zinc coating gives protection that an uncoated wire lacks. Where the wire is used indoors or covered soon after tying, black annealed wire is the usual choice.
We do not repeat the full comparison here. Our guide to black annealed vs galvanized tie wire sets the two finishes side by side, and our guide to black annealed wire uses maps the jobs the soft finish suits.
How do you specify tie wire in an import order?
A clear order lets several manufacturers quote on exactly the same product. These are the fields we ask for.
| Order field | Black annealed | Galvanized |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | 0.8 to 8 mm, stated in mm | 0.8 to 8 mm, stated in mm |
| Strength or temper | Tensile strength 300 to 450 N/mm² | Soft, medium or hard temper under ASTM A641 |
| Surface | No zinc coating | Zinc coating 50 to 300 g/m² |
| Standard quoted | EN 10218-2 | EN 10244-2 and ASTM A641 |
| Also state | Coil weight or packing, quantity in tonnes, destination port or site | |
Diameter in millimetres. Always give the size in mm. Gauge numbers belong to several different systems, and the same number can mean different diameters. If your customer’s drawings use a gauge, convert it with our wire gauge chart and send the mm value; binding wire gauge sizes lists common gauges in mm and metres per kilogram.
Finish. Black annealed or galvanized. This one word decides which standard, which strength figure and which coating figure follow.
Tensile strength for black annealed. We quote black annealed wire with a tensile strength of 300 to 450 N/mm². If your market expects a narrower band inside that range, say so.
Zinc coating for galvanized. EN 10244-2 sets the requirements for coating mass, other properties and testing of zinc coatings on steel wire. Coating weight is written in g/m², the mass of zinc on each square metre of surface. Our range runs from 50 to 300 g/m². ASTM A641 also covers the wire in soft, medium and hard temper; for hand tying, name the temper you need.
Standard. EN 10218-2 sets tolerances on the diameter of round wire, whether bright, metallic coated or non-metallic coated, and it gives way where a product standard sets its own dimensions. Naming it, or the standard your tender requires, makes the diameter tolerance part of the offer.
How are coils and loading handled?
ASTM A641 describes galvanized wire supplied in coils, and coils are how we quote both finishes. State a preferred coil weight or packing in the request; if you have none, ask for the manufacturer’s standard and compare it between offers.
How much fits in a container depends on the coil weight, the packing and the weight limit of the container booked, so the load is confirmed per order. Our container loading guide for wire coils explains the published container limits. We give no fixed tonnage per container in this guide.
What should you compare between offers?
A price only means something when the product behind it is identical. Before comparing, check that every offer states:
- the same diameter in mm, and the same standard for its tolerance;
- the same finish, and for galvanized wire the same coating weight or class;
- the same tensile band for black annealed wire, or the same temper for galvanized wire;
- the same coil weight and packing, since these change handling and loading;
- the same quantity and delivery point.
If one offer is silent on a field, ask before you decide. A lower figure on an incomplete offer often turns out to describe a different wire.
How does Reinwent source tie wire for importers?
Reinwent is a trading and sourcing company, not a mill. You send one specification, the same one any binding wire manufacturer should quote on; our team asks for offers, lines them up on the same basis and follows the order through the steps in our guide to importing steel wire from Türkiye. Our page on black annealed wire from Türkiye describes the ordering steps for that finish, and the steel wire hub lists every wire type we supply. When your fields are ready, request a quote.
