Key facts
- Annealing is a softening heat treatment that lowers hardness and raises ductility, which is why annealed steel wire can be twisted by hand.
- A zinc coating keeps moisture away from the steel and corrodes first where the coating is cut or scratched.
- EN 10218-2 sets the diameter tolerances of round steel wire, both uncoated and coated.
- Gauge systems share similar numbers that are not interchangeable, and a higher gauge number means a thinner wire.
- FOB, CFR and CIF are Incoterms rules, which set out the tasks, costs and risks shared between seller and buyer.
What do buyers mean by binding wire?
Binding wire is a name from the building site and the hardware shop, not from a standard. Crews use it to tie, fix and bundle materials, so what they need is a wire soft enough to wrap and twist by hand. The name travels well: buyers in the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, South Africa and the UK all search for it, while other markets ask for the same goods as tie wire.
In our range the product behind the name is black annealed wire. Its product data lists it as tie wire and binding wire, and its listed uses are binding and fixing in construction work, tying jobs that need a soft, flexible wire, and bundling. When a tender simply says binding wire, this is the finish it usually means.
Two words in that product name explain why. Annealed means heat treated to soften the steel: references on metallurgy describe annealing as a treatment that increases ductility and reduces hardness, and IspatGuru notes that steel wire is annealed to restore the ductility lost in drawing. Our explainer what is annealed wire walks through the process. Black only says that no zinc is applied.
The coated alternative is galvanized wire, which is also listed for tying and binding. Galvanizing puts a protective zinc layer on the steel. While that layer is intact it shields the steel from moisture, and because zinc is anodic to steel, it corrodes first at scratches and cut ends. Our comparison of black annealed vs galvanized tie wire helps when the choice is not yet made.
How do you specify a binding wire order?
A manufacturer can only quote a binding wire order once it knows these points.
| Point | What to write | Reinwent range or option |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | One figure in mm per item | 0.8 to 8 mm |
| Finish | Black annealed, or galvanized with a coating figure | Galvanized: 50 to 300 g/m² |
| Strength | A band, if your market asks for one | Black annealed: 300 to 450 N/mm² |
| Quantity | Tonnes, per diameter | Per order |
| Packing | Coil weight or packing you prefer | Details field of the form |
| Delivery | Destination port and delivery term | Any of the eleven Incoterms rules |
Diameter in millimetres. Many binding wire requests arrive with a gauge number instead of a size, and that is where mistakes start. Gauge systems such as the Standard Wire Gauge and the American wire gauge use similar numbers that are not interchangeable, and in each of them the diameter falls as the number rises. Look the number up in our wire gauge chart or in binding wire gauge sizes, confirm which system your customer meant, and send the mm value.
Finish. Write black annealed or galvanized in so many words. For galvanized wire, add the coating mass in g/m² or a class from one named standard; our galvanized wire guide for importers explains how.
Standard. We quote black annealed wire to EN 10218-2. That standard sets tolerances on the diameter of round wire, and it covers uncoated as well as metallic and non-metallic coated wire, so naming it puts the size tolerance into every offer.
Quantity and packing. Give the tonnage for each diameter. If your warehouse or your customers expect a certain coil weight, add it to the Details field of the request form; otherwise ask for each manufacturer’s usual packing and compare it. How many tonnes fit in a container depends on the coils and the container booked, so it is confirmed per order; our container loading guide explains the published limits.
Destination and delivery term. Name the destination port and pick one of the eleven Incoterms rules in the quote form. These rules, published by the International Chamber of Commerce, define which tasks, costs and risks sit with the seller and which with the buyer.
How is binding wire priced?
There is no fixed binding wire price on this site, and we do not quote one in a guide. A price is set for a specific order (see how steel wire is priced): the diameter, finish, quantity, packing, destination and delivery term all go into it, which is why the request has to state them.
For each request we collect prices from many suppliers and set the offers out on one basis, the same diameter, finish, packing and delivery term, so the figures you compare describe the same goods. You receive the quotation within 12 hours of sending a complete request. Before choosing, check that every offer you hold, from us or elsewhere, gives:
- the diameter in mm and its tolerance standard;
- the finish, with the coating figure for galvanized wire;
- the coil weight and packing;
- the quantity per diameter;
- the destination port and the delivery term.
Can binding wire be quoted for delivery to the UAE or Nigeria?
Yes. We quote importers in the United Arab Emirates and Nigeria, and a request for either works like any other: you name the destination port and the delivery term, and we quote on that basis. Import duties, customs clearance and the paperwork your authorities require depend on the destination country, so confirm them with your customs broker before you order. For fuller walk-throughs see binding wire supplier for UAE importers and binding wire supplier for Nigeria importers. Our note on how steel wire is classified for customs helps that conversation.
Where does binding wire come from, and who makes it?
The wire we source is made by manufacturers in Türkiye, with other qualified mills on request. Our page on black annealed wire from Türkiye describes that supply route, and our checklist for choosing a steel wire manufacturer in Türkiye applies one test to every plant. For the full buying process, from the first request to delivery, see our guide to importing steel wire from Türkiye.
If your question is less about the name and more about every field of a tie wire order, our tie wire guide for importers covers both finishes side by side.
How does Reinwent handle a binding wire request?
Reinwent is a trading and sourcing company, not a mill. Our team takes your specification, asks several suppliers to quote on it, lines the offers up on one basis and stays in contact with you from the first request until the coils arrive. Some products are available from stock. Your quotation states what applies to your order. The how we work page sets out each step, and the steel wire hub lists the other wire types we supply.
When the diameter, finish, quantity, packing and destination are ready, request a quote and you receive a quotation within 12 hours.
