Binding wire supplier for Nigeria importers

A Nigerian importer buying binding wire from Türkiye should write the order down first: black annealed or galvanized, diameter in millimetres, coil weight, packing, quantity, port and delivery term. SONCAP and customs rules are set by Nigerian authorities, so confirm them with a customs broker before ordering.

Key facts

  • The Standards Organisation of Nigeria describes SONCAP as a pre-shipment verification of conformity for imported goods that it regulates.
  • The SON pages we read do not mention steel wire, so whether a given wire is covered has to be confirmed with SON or a customs broker.
  • Apapa and Tin Can Island are Lagos ports that serve Lagos and western Nigeria.
  • Onne, in Rivers State, has a container terminal.
  • FOB, CFR and CIF are Incoterms rules that apply only to sales involving transport by water.

Who buys binding wire in Nigeria, and what do they ask for?

Three kinds of buyer search for this wire: builders who need it on site, hardware traders who sell coils across a counter, and wholesalers who supply those traders. Online adverts rarely say which diameter, coil weight or finish is on offer, so an importer needs a written specification.

The names cause confusion. Binding wire and tie wire, in Lagos or elsewhere, are two names for black annealed wire: soft, uncoated steel wire that crews twist by hand for tying and binding in construction. Galvanized wire is the zinc-coated alternative. Our tie wire guide and the black annealed vs galvanized comparison help you choose.

What goes into a binding wire specification?

Write these points into the first message, in this order, so every supplier answers the same question.

Points a binding wire request for Nigeria should state
PointWhat to writeReinwent range or option
FinishBlack annealed, or galvanized with a coating figureGalvanized: 50 to 300 g/m²
DiameterOne figure in mm for each item0.8 to 8 mm
StandardThe standard for diameter toleranceEN 10218-2
Coil weight and packingWhat your customers lift and storeDetails field of the form
QuantityTonnes for each diameterSet per order

Customers often ask in gauge numbers, but gauge systems assign different diameters to the same number, so convert before you order. The binding wire gauge sizes guide gives the millimetre figures, and the wire gauge chart holds the full table.

EN 10218-2 sets tolerances on the diameter of round steel wire, uncoated or coated, so asking for it puts a size tolerance into every offer. For galvanized wire, add the coating figure; the galvanized wire guide for importers explains how to read it.

What drives binding wire pricing?

A binding wire price needs a specification behind it, and this page states none, because an offer depends on your order. These items move it:

  • Finish. Galvanized wire carries zinc, and the coating figure you ask for is part of what is being priced.
  • Diameter. Offers are compared size by size.
  • Coil weight and packing. Both affect handling, and both affect how much fits in a container.
  • Quantity. State tonnes for each diameter rather than a total for the whole order.
  • Port and delivery term. The freight to a Nigerian port and the Incoterms rule decide what the offer covers and what you pay separately.

Ask each supplier to say what its offer includes, since equal headline figures can cover different things; see how steel wire is priced.

How does a container reach a Nigerian port?

Coils normally travel in dry containers. The load depends on coil weight, packing and the container’s own limit, and it is confirmed for each order. Our container loading guide collects published container limits, and the wire weight calculator works out the mass of a wire.

Name the discharge port in your request. Wikipedia describes Apapa and Tin Can Island as Lagos ports serving Lagos and western Nigeria, and Apapa as hosting a major container terminal. Onne lies in Rivers State, and its container terminal is the West Africa Container Terminal. Your forwarder decides which port suits your route. No transit time is given here, because it depends on the line and the route.

Which delivery term should you ask for?

The International Chamber of Commerce publishes the Incoterms rules, which divide cost and risk between seller and buyer. FOB, CFR and CIF apply only to sales involving transport by water. Under CFR the seller pays freight to the named port; CIF adds insurance. Reference works caution that FOB and CIF are written for non-containerized sea freight, so for coils in containers ask your forwarder whether FCA, CPT or CIP fits better. Write the rule together with the named Nigerian port in the request.

What do SONCAP and customs mean for an order?

Check this before you commit money; we say only what the authorities’ own pages say. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is described as the statutory body for standardising and regulating product quality in Nigeria. Its SONCAP service page calls SONCAP a pre-shipment verification of conformity to standards, and its FAQ says the scheme applies to all SON-regulated products imported into Nigeria.

What those pages list as outside the scheme is food, medicines and most medical items, certain raw chemicals for genuine manufacturers, military equipment, contraband and used goods other than automobiles. Neither page names steel wire, binding wire or ironmongery. We could not verify from them whether black annealed or galvanized wire is regulated, and an advert or a trader’s word is not a substitute. The Federal Government can add or remove products from the scheme, as the service page notes, so the answer can change.

For goods that are covered, the SON pages describe a sequence of documents: a Product Certificate for the exporter, a SONCAP Certificate for the importer, and steps that involve the Nigeria Customs Service. SON’s homepage also carries a notice about moving SONCAP and import permit processes to the National Single Window platform. We state no duty, tariff line or permit rule, and make no claim about holding or arranging any such document.

A customs broker prepares paperwork and obtains clearance, though the role varies by country. Choose one who clears steel wire at your port, and take these questions to them:

  • Is this wire regulated under SONCAP, or does an import permit or exemption apply?
  • Which tariff line and which duties and taxes apply? See how steel wire is classified for customs.
  • Which documents must the supplier issue, and in whose name?

How does a quotation work with Reinwent?

Reinwent is a trading and sourcing company, not a manufacturer. It asks several suppliers to quote on your specification, sets their offers on one basis, and stays in contact until delivery. You deal with one point of contact. Some products are available from stock, and your quotation states what applies to your order.

For a Nigerian request, send:

  1. the finish and the diameter in mm;
  2. the quantity in tonnes for each diameter;
  3. the coil weight or packing you prefer;
  4. the discharge port and the Incoterms rule;
  5. any document requirement your broker has named.

You receive a quotation within 12 hours. For a full order walk-through read the binding wire guide for importers; for the UAE equivalent see binding wire supplier for UAE importers. The route is covered in importing steel wire from Türkiye and on the black annealed wire from Türkiye page, and how we work lists each step.

When the specification is ready, request a quote for your Nigerian port.

Questions buyers ask

How do I find a binding wire supplier for Nigeria?

Fix the specification before you contact anyone: finish, diameter in mm, coil weight, packing, quantity and port. Reinwent gets offers from several suppliers on that specification and gives you one point of contact.

What decides the cost of a binding wire order?

We state no prices. Finish, diameter, coil weight, packing, quantity, port and delivery term all change an offer, so send them together.

Is tie wire in Lagos the same as binding wire?

Yes. Tie wire and binding wire are two names for black annealed wire, the soft uncoated wire. Galvanized wire has a zinc coating, so say which you want.

Does binding wire need SONCAP?

We could not confirm it. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria says SONCAP applies to all products it regulates when imported, and the pages we read do not name steel wire. Ask SON or your customs broker about your exact wire before you order.

Does Reinwent provide SONCAP documents?

This guide makes no promise about documents. Ask your broker or the authority which papers apply to your shipment, then tell us what you need so the request states it.

Which Nigerian port should I name in the request?

Name the port your broker will clear through. Apapa and Tin Can Island serve Lagos, and Onne in Rivers State has a container terminal. Confirm the route with your forwarder.

Which sizes can I ask for?

Black annealed wire is quoted in diameters from 0.8 to 8 mm, to EN 10218-2, with a tensile strength of 300 to 450 N/mm². Galvanized wire is quoted in the same diameters, with a zinc coating of 50 to 300 g/m².

How quickly will I receive a quotation, and is Reinwent a manufacturer?

Send the request through the quote form and you receive a quotation within 12 hours. Reinwent is a trading and sourcing company, not a manufacturer, and it follows the order until the coils reach you.
