Cold drawn wire

Cold drawn wire, also called drawn wire or bright wire, is steel wire pulled to size at room temperature, in diameters from 0.8 to 6 mm with a tensile strength of 500 to 1,000 N/mm². Standard: EN 10218-2. Origin: Türkiye, other qualified mills on request.

Cold drawn wire: what it is

Cold drawn wire is steel wire that has been pulled through a die to reduce its diameter. Drawing is usually done at room temperature, which makes it a cold working process, and reaching the final size normally takes several passes through successively smaller dies. The metal gets thinner and longer, and it gets stronger. This range runs from 0.8 to 6 mm in diameter with a tensile strength of 500 to 1,000 N/mm², and the standard given is EN 10218-2.

Drawn wire, bright wire and annealed wire

The trade also calls this drawn wire or bright wire. Bright in this sense means an unfinished, uncoated surface; it does not mean polished. EN 10218-2 takes the same view: its tolerances on the diameter of round wire cover bright steel wire, which it describes as uncoated, as well as metallic coated and non-metallic coated wire.

Drawing raises strength and lowers ductility. Annealing is the reverse step: it restores ductility so wire can be worked again. That is why cold drawn wire, at 500 to 1,000 N/mm², sits above black annealed wire at 300 to 450 N/mm² in tensile strength, while the annealed product is softer.

Who uses it

Drawn wire is made into fasteners such as nails, staples, bolts and screws, and into other small hardware. For wire made from high carbon steel, see high carbon spring wire.

Questions buyers ask

What does cold drawn mean?

Cold drawn wire is pulled through a die at room temperature. Because this is a cold working process, the wire becomes thinner and longer, and its strength rises.

What is bright wire?

In the wire industry, bright describes wire with an unfinished, uncoated surface. EN 10218-2 also treats bright steel wire as uncoated wire.

What diameter and strength does cold drawn wire have?

Diameters run from 0.8 mm to 6 mm, with a tensile strength of 500 to 1,000 N/mm².

Why is cold drawn wire stronger than annealed wire?

Drawing strengthens steel and lowers its ductility. Annealing does the opposite and restores ductility, so annealed wire is softer; black annealed wire is offered at 300 to 450 N/mm².
