What a spring wire standard covers
A standard describes the wire a spring is made from: the kind of steel, the properties it must meet and the tests that check it. Two standards are commonly named for spring wire, EN 10270-1 and ASTM A227. Name the one your spring drawing or customer specification calls for when you ask for a quotation.
EN 10270-1
EN 10270-1 applies to patented cold drawn unalloyed steel wire of circular cross-section for the manufacture of mechanical springs. It covers wire for both static duty and dynamic duty applications, and it sets requirements for the classification and designation of the wire. The grade and tensile strength requirements for an order are confirmed in the quotation.
ASTM A227
ASTM A227 covers two classes of round cold-drawn steel spring wire, Class I and Class II. It sets the properties and quality for mechanical springs that are not subject to high stress and do not require high fatigue properties, and for wire forms. Specimens undergo tension and wrap tests, and the chemical composition is checked for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon.
What to tell us
Name the standard you need, the wire diameter, and whether the spring carries a static or a dynamic load. We check the specification with manufacturers, and the grade and standard available for your order are confirmed in the quotation. See our high carbon spring wire page for the diameter range.
